Optional engines included 300 horsepower (206 net) 400 cubic-inch Turbo Jet V8 (not to be confused with the two-barrel 400 small block this engine actually displaced 402 cubic-inches) and 365-gross horsepower (285 net) 454 Turbo Jet V8 which came standard with dual exhaust. When equipped with dual exhaust, the 400 Turbo jet was rated at 260 hp (190 kW). At mid-year, the Turbo Hydramatic transmission and variable-ratio power steering became standard equipment on all Caprice (and Impala) models. The separate model names for fullsize Chevy wagons were used from 1969 to 1972. The four models correspond to the Caprice, Impala, Bel Air and Biscayne. So the Kingswood was the equivalent of the Impala, while the Kingswood Estate was the equivalent of the Caprice. The Bel Air and Biscayne were not selling in large numbers by this point (recent discussion here suggested that the Biscayne may have been a de facto fleet-only model from 1970 on), so I’d guess that relatively few Brookwoods and Townsmans were made.

I rode along on a road trip once. It had sports car acceleration and handling compared with our Impala wagon. When Chevy re-integrated the wagons into the regular model lines in 1973, all three remaining fullsize models had wagons (Bel Air, Impala, Caprice). The Biscayne was dropped entirely in the U.S. at the end of the 1972 model year, although it continued to be available in Canada through 1975.As mentioned we had a ’70 Chevy wagon – and the 3rd was rear-facing with the 2-way tailgate. The Ford wagons had the tailgate/doorgate that didn’t necessitate lowering of the window glass to swing out like a door, which was an advantage; that may have accounted for Ford dominating the wagon sales for years. The ’77 GM B-body wagons used the same tailgate design as the Fords, was more efficient in space utlization and fuel economy, so it’s not too surprising that the GM full size wagons started to outsell their FoMoCo counterparts from then on.

  1. For all of you non-Americans, this is what you missed out on. The big GM wagons of this era are as all-American as a Big Gulp or Big Mac. Big dreams, big people, big cars, big thirst, big families, big love, big life. What more can you ask for? Well, it depends… GM did know its customers. Some folks never have fallen out of love with these big wagons, and why not? Beats a Buick Enclave in my book.
  2. I remember trying to diagnose and repair that clam-shell contraption. Dirt got into the mechanism and eventually ground the plethora of guides, tracks, rollers and motors into dust. It was useless trying to replace just one bit of it because if you did, something else was sure to go wrong very soon. We’d replace the whole shebag it often cost upwards of $1000, a lot of money in 1985 for a ten-plus year old wagon.
  3. Also remember that until like 1989-1990 or so, Buick still had BOTH a LeSabre Estate Wagon and an Electra Estate Wagon, so there was a cheapie and a full on woody, usually I remember seeing more Electra Estates than LeSabre Estates, after the Electra nameplate was dropped, only the loaded up wagon was available under the generic ESTATE WAGON moniker, with no Electra or LeSabre prefix.
  4. or styling revisions. All models came equipped with new modern composite lights and a stand-up hood ornament returned. A woodgrain applique was used on the dashboards for all models. The model line-up was slightly revised, and now included a base level Caprice 8-passenger wagon, and a Caprice Classic Brougham LS 4-door sedan. The Brougham LS featured all the Brougham amenities, plus a padded vinyl roof, opera lights and LS monograms. Leather upholstery was a new available option for Brougham and Brougham LS sedans.
  5. Chevrolet Caprice Classic Wagon is a well-known car manufactured by Chevrolet which is an American automobile division of the American manufacturer General Motors

For 1988, the 9C1 Caprice was unchanged. Michigan State Police tests proved to be more competitive, with the Ford LTD Crown Victoria show a strong improvement in performance. The Plymouth and Dodge models continued unchanged and were not competitive with the Chevrolet and Ford. 1988 tests showed the Caprice with the fastest quarter mile and 0-100 MPH times, the best fuel economy, the fastest road course time (although it tied with the Ford) and the best ergonomics. The Ford edged out the Chevrolet with a 1 mph (1.6 km/h) faster top speed, and better brakes, but the Chevrolet scored second place for both those categories. Overall the Chevrolet scored the highest in the competition, followed by the Ford, Dodge and Plymouth. My Parents’ car had the standard interior and it looked a LOT like the interior on the pictured, we even had manual crank windows and manual door locks (no cruise-control, either). A neighbor had a similar car, but they purchased the deluxe interior, it was much nicer. My Dad always said that he had regretted not buying the deluxe interior.

Me thinks it was the other way around; GM obviously liked the forward-facing third seat, having done them in the Vista/Sports wagons. The clamshell was possible because of the forward-facing third seat.A new grille and taillights moved above the new 5 mph (8 km/h) rear bumper highlighted the changes for the 1974 Caprice Classic along with new thick "B" pillars and fixed rear quarter opera windows on two-door coupes, which essentially eliminated pillarless hardtop design much like the GM intermediates did the previous year. Other bodystyles including the four-door pillared and hardtop sedans, convertible and Estate Wagon were carried over with only minor changes from 1973. New to the engine roster was a four-barrel version of the small block 400 cubic-inch Turbo Fire V8 rated at 180 hp (134 kW) (which was the standard engine on wagons and all cars sold in California, optional on other models in 49 states). All other engines were carried over from 1973 although the 454 Turbo Jet lost 10 horsepower (7.5 kW), now rated at 235 hp (175 kW) Also new for 1974 were integrated lap and shoulder seat belts and the unpopular "interlock" system that required the driver and front seat passengers to fasten seat belts in order to start the vehicle. The interlock mandate received so much public outcry that Congress rescinded it shortly after the introduction of the 1975 models. A new option this year was a remote control for the passenger-side outside rearview mirror.

  1. or refinements. Again the front and rear styling was refreshed slightly. The 250 six gained five horsepower, while the 305 V8 lost 15 horsepower (11 kW). The change to the 305 was a result of switching from the larger Rochester 2GC carburetor to the smaller Rochester Dualjet carburetor. The 350 engine was unchanged.
  2. The 1972 Caprice received a facelift with a revised grille that was lower in height than the '71 model flanked by a new bumper with increased protection one year ahead of the Federal mandate. This was done by a bumper within bumper design. Heavy gauge beams reinforced the bumper which are attached to the frame. The rear bumper also featured this design and now had the triple taillights now mounted in the bumper. Engine offerings were carried over from 1971 with the switch to "net" horsepower ratings including 170 hp (127 kW) for the standard two-barrel 400 cu in (6.6 L) Turbo Fire V8, 210 hp (157 kW) (240 hp (179 kW) with optional dual exhaust) for the four-barrel Turbo Jet 400 big-block V8 and 270 hp (201 kW) for the four-barrel dual exhaust 454 cu in (7.4 L) Turbo Jet V8 (rated at 230 hp (172 kW) in wagons with single exhaust). Turbo Hydramatic transmission, variable-ratio power steering and power front disc brakes continued as standard equipment. New to the Caprice lineup was a pillared four-door sedan. All models also featured a revised "Astro Ventilation" system utilizing vents in the doorjams that replaced the troublesome 1971 version that used vents in the trunklid and turned out to be a major source of complaints to Chevy (and other GM divisions) dealers from customers.
  3. or updates while styling remained unchanged. The interior of the Caprice was updated for 1985, marking its most significant update since 1977. The simulated woodgrain applique used on the dash was replaced with a simulated silver metallic applique. The shaft-style radio was replaced with a more modern double DIN style radio, while the pull-out headlight switch was replaced by a push button style switch. The climate controls were updated with rotary switches for the fan and rear window defroster replacing the toggle style switches. The instruments were updated to have a more modern appearance, with a horizontal speedometer while a round speedometer was included with the optional gauge package.
  4. The manual gates were spring-loaded. You actually had to push them down past the 1/4 down spot. You pushed hard and when it reached the bottom it locked down as you hit a catch. When you went to open it, you turned the key and the spring sent it back up the track, you grabbed it at the 3/4 up (1/4 down) position and yanked it up to the top, where it latched again.

I could see the owner now, on the phone to the dealer trying to explain how their whiz-kid teen managed to completely separate the rear gate from their shiny new mid-70s Ford wagon! The Middle Eastern Caprice came out in 2000 in four versions, base LS, standard mid-range LTZ, a sporty SS and the range topper Royale (introduced in 2002). Differences between the models were mostly equipment and slight styling tweaks. The base LS and LTZ came standard with a 295 hp (220 kW) 5.7 litre Gen III V8, the SS and Royale came with a 325 horsepower (242 kW) version of the same engine. In 2003, Holden launched a revised and facelifted Statesman and Caprice, which was reflected in their Middle Eastern versions for the 2004 model year. The new models sported new front and rear fascias and completely redesigned interior. Engines carried over unchanged. No Cadillac hearses used the clamshell since the bodies were custom build by their respective manufacturer, Superior, S&S, etc, but there were some combinations made using a clamshell for low priced hearses. This Estate Wagon hearse was made by Armburster/Stageway and sold by Superior, its a streched Estate Wagon hearse, with a clamshell rear door. The 1984 model year saw the return of the two-door sport coupe making a three model line-up. Styling remained unchanged. 1984 models were virtually identical to 1981 models. The windshield washer controls were moved from the dashboard to the turn signal stalk to create the multi-stalk. The optional cruise control (which continued to be mounted on the turn signal stalk) now featured acceleration/deceleration in 1 mph (1.6 km/h) increments. An optional Landau package included a vinyl roof, sport mirrors and reveal moldings. Powertrain availability and power ratings were unchanged for 1984. The 350 cu in diesel engine came standard with an automatic overdrive transmission when equipped in station wagons.

The Caprice sedan and coupe came standard with a luxurious cloth and vinyl bench seats with a folding center armrest in the rear seat. Optional on both models was a Strato bench seat which combined bucket-style seatbacks and center armrest with a bench cushion for six-passenger seating. Coupes could also be ordered with an all-vinyl interior featuring Strato bucket seats and center console with floor shifter, storage compartment, courtesy lighting and full instrumentation at the front end of the console that was integrated with the lower instrument panel - in essence a more luxurious Impala SS in a formal-roofed bodyshell. 3. I think that because the makers of the professional cars fabricated the rear bodies, the clamshell did not make the transition. The backs were so much higher than in the factory station wagons, and I don’t think you could get them fully open without them curving back into the cargo area at the other end. Or multi sections like a rolltop desk. Regular hinged doors were on the back of every hearse I ever saw.

The 1969 Caprice also offered a new GM-designed variable-ratio power steering unit as optional equipment along with a seldom-ordered "Liquid Tire Chain" option, which was a vacuum activated button that would spray ice melt on the rear tires (UPC option code is "V75"). The standard engine was enlarged to a 235 hp (175 kW) 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8 with optional engine choices including a new 350 cu in (5.7 L) Turbo Fire V8 rated at 255 and 300 hp (220 kW), a 265 hp (198 kW) 396 cu in (6.5 L) cubic-inch Turbo Jet V8, and 427 cu in (7.0 L) cubic-inch Turbo Jet V8s rated at 335 and 390 hp (291 kW). All V8 engines were now available with the three-speed Turbo Hydramatic transmission for the first time though the two-speed Powerglide was still offered with the 327 and 350 V8s. The Caprice began life in mid-1965 as a luxury trim package for the Impala four-door hardtop sedan, in response to the successful Ford LTD series. This included a stiffer suspension, higher-grade cloth and vinyl seat and door trim (as well as thicker, higher-grade carpeting), walnut trim on the dashboard and door panels, pull straps on the doors, extra convenience lights, special full wheel covers and an optional vinyl top. The name for the Chevrolet Caprice was coined by Bob Lund (Chevrolet's General Sales Manager) after a classy restaurant he frequented in New York City. However, some say the Caprice was named after Caprice Chapman, daughter of auto executive and influential Indy-car official James P. Chapman.

Chevrolet Caprice. Подписаться158. Поделиться Chevy's behemoth Caprice Classic is quite a competent car, which explains its popularity in police and taxi fleets. With the optional V8, sport suspension and wide tires mounted on alloy wheels, the Caprice offers good performance value in a traditional full-size sedan or wagon The 1980 Caprice Classic saw its first major revision since the 1977 downsizing. To further improve the fuel economy of the car, efforts were made to reduce weight and improve aerodynamics. The Caprice received all new exterior sheet metal, without drastically changing the look of the car. To improve aerodynamics the hood was tapered lower, while the trunk area was higher. The grille was now an egg crate style while the tail-light panel featured three separate square lights per side. All the doors and components within were redesigned to be lighter, including the window crank mechanisms, which now used a tape drive mechanism. Greater use of aluminum including in bumper reinforcement and in sedan/coupe radiators helped to further reduce the overall weight of the vehicle. 1980 models were approximately 100 pounds (45 kg) lighter than 1979 models. The 3rd seat was fine. As a 6′ 140 lb teen, I fit OK back there. They really did hold 9 passengers, although the rear middle, with the cabbage between your legs, was not much fun.

Unlike its recent predecessors, the ’73 Caprice offered only two engine choices. A 150-hp, small-block 400 (6.6-liter) V8 was standard, and quite adequate for typical use, thanks to its healthy torque curve. And of course, the big-block 454 (7.4-liter), rated at 245 hp, was optional. I’m guessing the 400 resides in this one, but the lack of the 454 emblem admittedly makes that guess an easy one. Since these big wagons weighed about 5,000 lbs, their available-engine palette makes a fair amount of sense–or at least it did before the energy crisis hit the drivers of these big boys, and hard.In its May, 1971 issue Motor Trend magazine published a comparison road test that included a Caprice Coupe and a Cadillac Sedan de Ville. The tested Caprice was powered by the 454 V8 and loaded with virtually all available options to provide a more equal test of the two cars and match the level of equipment and opulence of the Cadillac. Though M/T noted that the Cadillac had a higher level of quality than the Chevrolet along with a far more luxurious interior (the DeVille was upholstered in leather while the Caprice had the standard cloth trim), the magazine ultimately considered the Chevy as the better value in its loaded form at $5,550.35 (base price $3,740) compared to the Cadillac's $9,081 pricetag mainly due to the price spread of the two cars as tested and the fact that the $3,500 price difference bought only a bit more quality and a few more trick luxury options.

It was a corporate decision that more money could be made offering sport utility vehicles than full size family sedans. The assembly plant that had built the cars in Arlington, Texas was converted to SUV production. This specific plant built the Cadillac Fleetwood, the Caprice sedan and wagon, Buick Roadmaster sedan and wagon, and Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser wagon. Does anyone recall the movie “The World According to Garp” with Robin Williams? Garp’s family car was a ’71-’72 Buick Estate “clamshell” Wagon. The cargo capacity was the biggest it would ever be for a Chevrolet wagon, at 106.4 cubic feet. With 100.5 inches (2,550 mm) from the front seat to the tailgate and 48.8 inches (1,240 mm) between the rear wheels, these wagons could easily carry a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood with the tailgate closed. Kingswood wagons came in 2-seat or 3-seat variants. The 3-seat model had a forward facing rear seat that was placed over the rear axle area allowing for two additional occupants making them 8-passenger wagons. The Kingswood Estate had the same standaed 400 cubic-inch 2-barrel engine as the sedans, and the same engine options as the coupes and sedans. The station wagons were only available with single exhaust systems though so had the lesser power ratings. All Chevrolet Caprice models were called Caprice Classic for 1977, as had been the case since 1973. The Caprice Classic was available as a 4-door sedan, a 2-door sedan, a 6-passenger 2-seat station wagon and a 8-passenger 3-seat station wagon. All models were pillared sedans, and all doors had window frames. No more hardtop models were offered. Sounds like your dad’s choice somewhat mirrors my father’s. As mentioned earlier, depending on when your father was car-shopping, it’s possible that there weren’t hardly any ’71s due to the 1970 labor strike at GM. The 1971 Caprice was completely restyled on a longer 121.5-inch (3,090 mm) wheelbase and featured more rounded fuselage styling similar to that pioneered by Chrysler Corporation on its 1969 full-sized cars, along with new flush "pull-up" exterior door handles and double-shell roofs - both features first appearing on the 1970 1/2 Camaro and Pontiac Firebird. The basic "Full-Perimeter" frame and all-coil suspension were refined for improvements in ride and noise reduction. The new styling was highlighted by a Cadillac-like eggcrate grille with a "Caprice" emblem in the center and brushed metal trim surrounding the taillights on the rear deck. I’m amazed this thing only had 150 horsepower. I remember pealing out in dad’s and thinking it was the most powerful thing on earth. That’s torque for ya!

Ford’s dual-action tailgate was invented by Ford engineers Gerald Coker and Boleslaw Bodek. The patent was filed in August 1966, presumably just in time to make the 1-year filing window after the ’66 wagons came out. It issued in June, 1968. The old 17-year term would have meant it expired in 1985, clearing the way for others to use it after that.Chevelle wagons also had their own distinctive names from 1968-72, similar to the 1969-72 fullsize wagon lineup. The four versions were the Nomad, Greenbriar, Concours, and Concours Estate. They were badged as Chevelles, but did not use the subseries names used by other Chevelles (i.e., the Chevelle Concours was the wagon equivalent of the Chevelle Malibu).

Ford would respond with creative badge-engineering by applying a full-size nameplate to its intermediate line creating the 1977 LTD II, which was basically a reskinned and renamed Torino. Ford hoped customers would be turned off with Chevrolets small full-size models and advertisements of the day showed how Ford offered a choice of a large or smaller full-size sedan (LTD or LTD II). Ford hoped the LTD II would steal customers who wanted a smaller full-size car, but in reality the LTD II had poor space efficiency and didn't compare well with the Chevrolet fullsize models. In 1979 Ford released a true downsized full-size car with the introduction of the 1979 Ford LTD. Chrysler responded in 1979 when it re-engineered its intermediate B-body cars, and designated them the full-size R-bodies. However, these were not true downsized cars like GM and Ford introduced. Thanks for the patent background–I did sort of wonder whether the patent had expired or GM had finally paid Ford to license that approach after trying so many others for so long.I think by the early 80’s The Panther Wagons were sold a good deal more upmarket, Especially the Country Squire compared to the Caprice, while the Buick and Olds B-Wagons of the 80s could be had rather plain. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Colony Park without Leather, but I’ve seen plenty of cloth Custom Cruisers and LeSabre Estates. I’m going to get one together, and take some more pictures next time I’ll bring her into the light of day.I give GM credit for trying something different but the space utilization was remarkably bad (at least as a cargo hauler). Note how GM switched back to boxy for its next-generation wagon.

I learned how to drive on a 73 Impala wagon with a 400. It seemed to improve a great deal in power and less noise after removing the ‘AIR’ pump and plumbing. Like most of the GM cars my parents owned, there were engine troubles at low miles. On this one, the heads required reworking for bad valves. After that, it was great. Sold on at 120,000 miles. Aside from the rust in the rear quarters, needing a new gas tank, and new leaf springs.I wonder if it lists GM as a sponsor at the end, I always look for that, like the Chevrolet sponsorship in Live and Let Die, where they provided a highway full of 1973 Chevies.

Amazing big car with an amazing feature that in my opinion, should have been lasted a little bit longer or retaken in models as the ’91 Impalas or other GM products of the time. It is space-saving and easy to load, either passengers or cargo. I was too young when they were rolling around, and, by the way, they actually were sold in other countries. I also think that the statement “For all of you non-Americans, this is what you missed out on.” is somewhat wrong; in fact a great deal of drivers outside the US were able to drive one. “Americans” are all of us people who were born and live in this continent, from Alaska to Argentina, as Europeans are all the inhabitant of the several countries from the subcontinent called Europe, or Europa. Chevrolet Forum - Chevy Enthusiasts Forums > Past Chevrolet Cars > Caprice. I found a good deal for an '83 Chevy Caprice Classic Wagon, and i was wondering where to look before buying. Any common known problems The Chevrolet Caprice and Caprice Classic were full-sized automobiles produced by the Chevrolet division of General Motors in the United States and Canada from 1965 through 1996 model years and in Mexico from 1977 through 1983. The 1976 Caprice Classic marked the sixth and final year of a body style introduced in 1971. The '76 Caprice weighed approximately 4314 pounds and was 222.9 in. (5.66 m) long, growing considerbly from the 1971's 4040 pounds and 216.8-inch (5,510 mm) length. Only minor changes were made for '76, including an eggcrate grille similar to that of the 1976 Cadillac Calais/DeVille/Fleetwood flanked by new rectangular headlights, along with revised exterior and interior trimmings. Engine options remained unchanged, and the 350 2-barrel remained standard in everywhere but California (which had the 350 4-barrel as standard)and the small block 400 4 barrell was still available. Power ratings were unchanged except for the 350 4-barrel engine was now rated at 165 hp (123 kW) and the dual exhaust equipped 454 was rated at 225 hp (168 kW) (still unavailable in Californaia). The was the final year for the big block 454 V8 to be offered, along with hardtop body styles and the clamshell-tailgate design for the station wagon. The new styling increased the trunk capacity of both coupes and sedans to 20.9 cubic feet. This increase was also partially achieved with a now standard compact spare tire on a 16-inch (410 mm) wheel. A new frame lift jack replaced the bumper mounted model. A larger 25 US gallon fuel tank was standard equipment in sedans and coupes. Easy-roll radial tires, improved anti-corrosion measures, low friction ball joints and larger front suspension bushings were also new for 1980. Puncture-sealant tires and cornering lights were new options.

The 1993 Chevrolet Caprice Classic LT was popular as a police car and taxi. Only two years after its major 1991 restyling, the 1993 As with the previous generation, Chevrolet juggled trim levels, adding a new upscale model to the line. Caprice now denoted the wagon, Caprice Classic the base sedan.. .css-8kezxj{-webkit-align-items:center;-webkit-box-align:center;-ms-flex-align:center;align-items:center;display:-webkit-inline-box;display:-webkit-inline-flex;display:-ms-inline-flexbox;display:inline-flex;color:#3666BD;-webkit-text-decoration:none;text-decoration:none;font-style:normal;font-weight:normal;}.css-8kezxj svg{margin-right:8px;}.css-8kezxj:hover{-webkit-text-decoration:underline;text-decoration:underline;}.css-8kezxj:active{background-color:#7f9fda;}.css-8kezxj[disabled],.css-8kezxj[disabled]:hover,.css-8kezxj.disabled,.css-8kezxj.disabled:hover{color:#a6bde6;cursor:default;pointer-events:none;}Based on 97 reviews Chevrolet Caprice Station Wagon from Poland. Chrysler Valiant V200 Station Wagon Prior to the clamshell wagons, the 69-70 GM A and B body wagons all used the 2 way tailgate and Chevrolet in particular billed them as “Walk In Wagons” because when the gate was opened as a door, there was a section of the rear bumper that swung with the door, leaving a step in the bumper. I always liked the 65-70 full-size wagons better, they looked sleek, yet were somewhat smaller than the 71-76 models, and they were a bit more space efficient as well. A probably long ago forgotten fact: the 70 full size Chevrolet wagons used a tailpipe design with vanes in it, made the opening look somewhat like a dash vent. this was not used on any other year or GM vehicle and it somewhat mimicked the front and rear side marker light design. The 70 B body Chevy wagons also had small reflectors in the rear bumper ends, again not shared with anything else. As these cars got older, you rarely saw one with the original style tailpipe, and many had the reflectors missing from the bumper.

The 1970 Caprice got a minor facelift featuring a more conventional under the grille bumper replacing the wrap-around unit used in 1969 along with new triple vertical taillights in the rear bumper. Power front disc brakes and fiberglass-belted tires on 15-inch (380 mm) wheels were made standard equipment along with a larger 250 hp (186 kW) 350 cubic-inch Turbo Fire V8. Optional V8s included a 300 hp (220 kW) 350 and a new 265 hp (198 kW) 400 cubic-inch Turbo Fire V8. At the top of the engine roster, the big block 427 was replaced by a new (and bored out) 454 cubic-inch Turbo Jet V8 offered in power ratings of 345 hp (257 kW) and 390 hp (290 kW). Both the 250- and 265 hp (198 kW) Turbo Fire engines were designed to use regular gasoline while the 300 hp (220 kW) 350 Turbo Fire and both 454 Turbo Jet engines required premium fuel. Caprice Classic - 5 Model Years Here's a 1977 Chevy Caprice coupe in a Colorado yard. This proved a wise move in light of certain geopolitical events a couple of years later, and the 1977-1979 full-sized Chevrolet coupes got a cool fastback wraparound rear glass treatment The base V8 engine was new for 1980. The 4.4L 267 cu in V8 rated at 115 hp (86 kW) and was the standard engine for station wagons. This engine had a 2-barrel carburetor Rochester Dualjet carburetor, and was not available in California. The 2-barrel carburetor on the 305 cu in V8 was replaced with a 4-barrel increasing the 305's output to 155 hp (116 kW). This was now the most powerful engine option (standard on California station wagons), as the 350 cu in V8 was no longer available, except as part of the police package option. The Oldsmobile-built 350 cubic-inch Diesel V8 was added to the option list for station wagons. This engine was rated at 105 hp (78 kW) and 205 lb·ft (278 N·m). To further increase fuel economy, all transmissions were equipped with an electronically controlled lock-up torque converter clutch.

I thought it was an Impala for a moment. During the 80's the Caprice, and Impala had very similar looks I would say the one of them that’s the rarest Would be the downsized GM A-Body wagons, those never seemed to be as popular as the GM-B wagons, The Ford Panther Wagons or even the Fox Body Wagons. The 1969 Caprice and other full-sized Chevrolets were restyled with crisper bodylines and front bumpers that wrapped around the grille (again with optional concealed headlights, for which headlight washers could be added as a new "one year only" option) along with ventless front windows on all models. The 119-inch (3,023 mm) wheelbase, inner bodyshell and framework were carried over from the 1965 model - along with the rooflines of pillared four-door sedans (which were offered in lesser Impala, Bel Air and Biscayne series, but not on Caprices, which continued only in two- and four-door hardtop choices only). The station wagon was renamed the Kingswood Estate, but continued to use exterior woodgrain trim along with exterior and interior trim shared with Caprice sedans and coupes. Inside, front seat headrests were now standard equipment due to a federal safety mandate and the ignition switch moved from the dashboard to the steering column and doubled as a lock for the steering wheel when the key was removed, a Federal mandate that took effect with the 1970 models but introduced a year earlier on all General Motors cars.

The Vista/Sport wagons also needed to raise their roofs in order to allow enough headroom for the third seat, which was positioned directly over the rear axle differential. I have a 1974 Caprice classic Estate Wagon I am considering purchasing The engine line-up saw major changes for 1985. The 4.3 L V6 engine (262 cu in) replaced both 3.8 L V6s in 1985 as the base engine for sedans and coupes. The 4.3 L engine was rated at 130 hp (97 kW) and 210 lb·ft (285 N·m), producing 20 hp (15 kW) more than the 229 cu in V6. The 4.3L V6 shared its bore and stroke with the 350 cu in Chevrolet V8. This engine came standard with a three-speed automatic but was available with the four-speed automatic overdrive transmission. The 5.0 L 305 cu in V8 engine received an electronic spark control and compression was increased from 8.6:1 to 9.5:1. This caused the 305's output to jump to 165 hp (123 kW). The 350 cu in diesel engine remained unchanged. 1987 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Mk.III 'Wildback'. 2009 Chevrolet Corvette C6 'Dragonback'. 1949 Ford Woody Wagon '1973 Surfwagon'. I sold it for two reasons. One was that I was moving and it helped to have one less car to relocate. The other was that the actual experience of owning one was mixed. It’s not like having a Ninety Eight with a really big trunk. The leaf spring rear gives it truckish ride and handling qualities, and the big open area in back adds to the noise level. Also, the wagons were trimmed out to Delta 88 level (base LeSabre for a Buick) with vinyl seats. The upside of the truckish suspension is you can work these as hard as trucks. The cargo capacity is phenomenal and even with the third seat up you have an amazing amount of space behind it. However, my next big GM wagon is going to be a box or bubble (1977-96) Buick Estate/Roadmaster, which is the closest thing you can get to a Caddy wagon without actually cutting up a Caddy and welding the business end of a wagon onto it, as some have done. Comprising the continents of South America and North America, linked by the isthmus of Panama, along with their associated islands, they cover 8.3% of the Earth’s total surface area (28.4% of its land area). The topography is dominated by the American Cordillera, a long chain of mountains that run the length of the west coast. The flatter eastern side of the Americas is dominated by large river basins, such as the Amazon, Mississippi, and La Plata. Extending 14,000 km in a north-south orientation, the climate and ecology varies strongly across the Americas, from arctic tundra of Canada, Greenland, and Alaska, to the tropical rain forests in Central America and South America. When the continents joined 3 million years ago, the Great American Interchange resulted in many species being spread across the Americas, such as the cougar, porcupine, and hummingbirds.” This 1977 Chevrolet Caprice Estate Wagon only has 63,000 original miles an. Description for Chevrolet Caprice 1977. This is a one owner garage stored classic I bought a month ago. Car has never been out in the winter and has never seen salt The engine line-up remained unchanged, although the 3.8 L 229 cu in V6 was now rated at 110 hp (82 kW) and the 5.0 L 305 cu in V8 was rated at 150 hp (112 kW). All engines were updated with the Computer Command Control (CCC) system which included an electronically metered carburetor. This change occurred in 1980 for California emission cars and did not occur to Canadian emission cars until 1987. A new four-speed automatic overdrive transmission with lock-up torque converter joined the powertrain line-up. This transmission helped boost highway fuel economy, while improving city performance by with a 3.08:1 rear axle ratio. The overdrive transmission was only available with the 305 cu in V8, and was a mandatory option for this engine.

I know a neighbor of ours growing up had one of the last clamshell Chevys a 75 IIRC (while we had a 77 Caprice) and it often had problems with getting stuck in the position as shown in one of the pictures above, the glass not going fully closed leaving a ~1′ gap perfect for sucking in exhaust when driving and dumping a ton of water into the back when stopped. The gate often stuck in the full down position too and this was in 78-9.Never ran into a problem with the clamshell gate or heard of anyone having an issue with it. They had either a manual pull-up handle lift or motorized gate. Only knew one family with the manual as a kid. I always assumed it was counter-weighted somehow but never asked. Was there a reliability difference between the two options? These big boys were built like tanks. My dad probably still wants to be buried in his. That Pontiac Safari would swallow 4’x8′ sheets of plywood/drywall by the pallet and keep on truckin’. Probably still on the road somewhere with its 455 still purrin’ along. Maybe it was the rear-end weight from the clamshell but as I recall that wagon road very well and didn’t seem to hop or wallow like so many wagons did. The B-bodies that came in ’77 always seemed very small to me after the clamshells.I never did like how small the back window was on the Ford and ’77-up GM wagons. I guess that’s part of growing up riding in the wayback of a ’71 K-Wood with glass all around you. I bought a ’76 Impala 3-seater when I was 19 for the 350 crate motor it had in it, but that car was just too good to part out. I drove it for a few years until I couldn’t afford tires, exhaust, A/C repair, and it’s 12.5 MPG appetite (I was in college and money was a bit tight). I replaced it with an ’80 Malibu Classic Estate with a leaking rear main seal, rusted out frame, and worn out front suspension – big mistake!

My Parents’ had a ’72 Buick Estate Wagon with the power gate. It worked perfectly for 6 or 7 years but when rust set in to the bottom part of the track, you had to be careful. If you lowered the gate too far it would fall off the track. If you were careful, it would work just fine. The 1979 models continued with only minor refinements. Agreed, if anything it is a detraction in robbing space under the floor and imposing a highly-angled rear window, plus the longer term issues noted above.Anyway, the ’70 had a rear-facing third seat and a tailgate similar to the Ford in that it could flop open normally or swing out like a door. The difference from Ford was that there was no outside handle, so the window had to be lowered to access either latch. gta-classics. Chevrolet Caprice 1992 Police SFPD SA Style. By the way, did anyone notice the roll-up windows and power door locks on our featured car? Kinda silly, because power windows and locks usually went together, but those were the days when you picked options individually rather than in packages. Want a blue car with a green interior? Might raise a few flags at the factory, but you could get it once they were sure you really wanted it. Chevrolet Caprice Classic Sedan Wagon 4x Headlight Eu Refit E-Certified +. Chevrolet Caprice Classic car badge / emblem --. £17.95. From Australia. £13.74 postage. Brand: Chevrolet 1981 saw only minor revisions to the Caprice Classic. Styling was unchanged other than the grille which remained egg crate style but now had larger sections. Refinements included redesigned front disc brakes for less drag and a translucent plastic master cylinder reservoir. The cruise control became equipped with a resume feature, while wire wheel covers had locking bolts to secure them in place. A minor facelift was made on the 1968 Caprice that included a new grille with taillights set into the bumper and optional hidden headlamps, along with ventless front windows on coupes. Federally-mandated side marker lamps became standard on all US cars that year; the Caprice carried over the optional white corner marker lamps at the forward edge of the fenders in addition to the now-required amber parking lights which were illuminated with the headlights. Also, a new 307 cubic-inch Turbo Fire V8 rated at 200 hp (150 kW) replaced the 195 hp (145 kW) 283 small block as the standard engine. Inside, the instrument panel was revised with a return to the horizontal sweep speedometer and a revised three-spoke steering wheel. The horizontal sweep speedometer made adding an optional instrument cluster as was found on the Super Sport models a difficult proposition; this was solved by narrowing the speedometer within its opening and flanking it with engine-turned instruments in the place of warning lights. The fuel gauge, placed next to the speedometer within its own pod in the base models, was moved to its new place next to the speedometer. A tachometer took the place of the fuel gauge in the large opening left by the fuel gauge.

My Dad had a 1971 rust colored Pontiac Grand Safari with the 455 V-8. My brother would race that thing against anyone and he usually won! LOL I remember my Dad complaining about two things with that car – the clamshell tailgate getting stuck in the freezing cold winter, and the automatic climate control not working right. Talk about weird options? It had auto climate control, cornering lamps, tilt and cruise but no power windows or locks! He had that car until 1977 and replaced it with a loaded brown Chevy Caprice Estate – that car was an absolute lemon!! This 1973 Chevrolet Caprice Classic two-door is also one great looking low-mile car. When you're selling such a great looking car sometimes it doesn't matter. Classic с 2004 года General Motors revived the Chevrolet Caprice nameplate in the Middle East markets on imported Holden Statesman/Caprice built by its Australian subsidiary Holden. The Holden WH Statesman was the first Statesman to be engineered to support both left- and right-hand drive (Middle Eastern market being LHD while Australia right-hand drive) in order to allow for manufacturing of export versions. Same was true for the related short-wheelbase Holden VT Commodore, whose left-hand drive version became the Chevrolet Lumina in the Middle East. Just wondering if anyone ever managed to get that gate to open “both ways”(!) at once and end up plop on the pavement behind the car.

The 1976 Caprice Classic marked the sixth and final year of a body style introduced for the 1971 model year. 1976 models weighed approximately 4,314 pounds (1,957 kg) and was 222.9 inches (5,660 mm) long, growing considerably from the 1971s 4,040 pounds (1,830 kg) and 216.8-inch (5,510 mm) length. Only minor changes were made for 1976, including an eggcrate grille similar to that of the 1976 Cadillac Calais/DeVille/Fleetwood flanked by new rectangular headlights, along with revised exterior and interior trimmings. Engine options remained virtually unchanged with the 350 two-barrel remained standard in everywhere but California where the 350 four-barrel was standard. The only change was the 350 four-barrel was available in sedans and coupes nationwide and rated at 165 hp (123 kW). The dual exhaust equipped 454 increased 10 hp (7.5 kW), rated at 225 hp (168 kW) and was still unavailable in California. Also available was the 180 horsepower (130 kW) four-barrel 400 V8 standard on wagons and optional on all other models. This was the final year for the big block 454 V8 to be offered, along with hardtop body styles and the clamshell-tailgate design for the station wagon. In 1986 Michigan State Police tests, the Chevrolet Caprice was competitive with the Ford LTD Crown Victoria, Dodge Diplomat and Plymouth Gran Fury. The Caprice had the fastest quarter mile times of the three, and the best fuel economy. The Dodge and Plymouth out ran the Caprice in the 0-100 MPH times, while it placed last in the road course times. However, there was only a 1/3 second difference between the fastest and slowest on the road course. All four cars were very close in competition for 1986, and there was little performance difference. My parents bought a loaded 72 Estate Wagon (including the “boat” trim) as a demonstrator. I loved that car as a junior high schooler! Beige vinyl top over copper on chrome wheels.Although by modern standards the 1977 downsized Chevrolet cars are quite large, the new Chevrolet had exterior dimensions closer to the intermediates of its day. In fact the 1977 Caprice shared the same 116" wheelbase of the intermediate sized Chevrolet Chevelle. The introduction of such a small full-size car was considered quite a risk for General Motors. To help ensure the car was a success, preview clinics were held by Chevrolet which returned very positive results. Furthermore, the design process for this car was revolutionized. No longer would the design be focussed towards the longer, lower, wider trend the GM had followed for many years. Designers started with a passenger compartment that was larger and more comfortable than the 1976 models and then worked outward to the exterior. Wind tunnel testing was used to help define the shape of the new Chevrolet rather than fix aerodynamic problems that cropped up after the design was completed as in previous years. These were clamshell-only (you could raise the window into the ceiling, or raise the window into the ceiling and drop the gate into the floor), an attempt to outdo Ford, which had a three-way tailgate: retract the integral rear window into the door, retract the window and lower the gate like a truck tailgate (hinged parallel to the bumper), or open the gate swing-out style like a door, window up or down. My parents’ Ford wagon had this design, and by the time I owned a GM B-wagon (’87 Caprice), GM had adopted it as well.

Chevrolet Caprice Classic Wagon 5.0 V8 Hydra-Matic, 142hk, 1987 It’s amazing how few of these I saw during my childhood in the mid-’80s. The downsized B-body wagons of the era, though, were EVERYWHERE. I saw far more early to mid ’80s Caprice/Electra/Custom Cruiser wagons than I ever saw of their coeval FoMoCo counterparts. Did Ford lose its lead in wagons or did their customers all go over to the Taurus? The 1969 Caprice and other full-sized Chevrolets were restyled with crisper body lines and front bumpers that wrapped around the grille (again with optional concealed headlights, for which headlight washers could be added as a new "one year only" option) along with ventless front windows on all models. The 119-inch (3,023 mm) wheelbase, inner bodyshell and framework were carried over from the 1965 model – along with the rooflines of pillared four-door sedans (which were offered in lesser Impala, Bel Air and Biscayne series, but not on Caprices, which continued only in two- and four-door hardtop choices only). The station wagon was renamed the Kingswood Estate, but continued to use exterior wood grain trim along with exterior and interior trim shared with Caprice sedans and coupes. The 1966 Caprice featured a revised grille and front bumper, and new rectangular taillights which replaced the Chevrolet-traditional triple round taillights used on Impalas since 1958 with the exception of the "bat-winged" 1959 model. Sedans and coupe models came standard with a luxurious cloth and vinyl bench seats with a folding center armrest in the rear seat. Optional on both was a "Strato bench" seat which combined bucket-style seat backs and center armrest with a bench cushion for six-passenger seating.

If I were going to get a GM car of this vintage, it would be one of these. Although I am partial to the Olds and Buick versions. It’s not that I really love them, but in today’s world, they are just so impressively, otherworldly BIG.1990 was essentially a carryover year for the Chevrolet Caprice and it marked the last year for the 1977 downsized body style. New for 1990 were door mounted front seat belts, quick connect fuel lines for the 305 cu in engine, and Scotchgard protected interior fabrics. The door mounted belts were installed to meet Federal Government passive restraint requirements for the 1990 model year. The model line-up and engine line-up were unchanged. The 1990 Caprice was only produced until the end of 1989 when production was shut-down to prepare for the redesigned 1991 models.

The Country Squire name traditionally equated to the top-trim big Ford. They started offering a wood-delete option in the early ’70s; After Ford killed the Galaxie 500/Country Sedan name for ’75, the cheap wagon was simply the LTD (Unless you wanted a fleet-only Ranch Wagon). The 1986 model year was the first year that that the Chevrolet Caprice was available with the 9C1 police package. With the Impala phased out after 1985, the new base Caprice became the logical choice for the police pacakge. The 9C1 Caprice was avaialble with the 4.3 L V6 or the 350 cid V8 engine only. Both engines were equipped the Turbo-hydramatic 700R-4 transmission and a 3.08:1 axle. As fuel economy became a bigger priority among Americans following the Arab Oil Embargo of late 1973 and early 1974, Chevy made the smaller 145 hp (108 kW) 350 cubic-inch small block V8 with two-barrel carburetor standard on all Caprice models except wagons for 1975 for sedans and coupes. In California, the four-barrel 155 hp (116 kW) 350 V8 was the base engine and this engine was unavailable elsewhere. Optional engines included the 175 hp (130 kW) 400 small block V8 (standard on wagons) and 215 hp (160 kW) 454 big block, the latter not available in California. All engines except for the 454 were single exhaust systems with the introduction of the catalytic converter. Station wagons that used the 454 now featured dual exhaust as well. Also introduced this year were GM's "High Energy" electronic ignition and radial tires that were advertised as part of "Chevrolet's New Efficiency System." The theme of economy continued through to the new options this year: A new "Econominder" gauge package included a temperature gauge and a "fuel econominder," the latter being a gauge alerting drivers as to when their driving habits caused the engine to use more or less fuel. Also new on the options list: intermittent windshield wipers, and 50/50 seating options on the Impala coupe/sedan and Caprice Classic convertible models.

Plus grande berline jamais construite par Chevrolet. Grand coffre arrière et habitacle spacieux It’s funny you mentioned the ’85 Cutlass Supreme Brougham coupe, as I had a desire to own one, too. I was too young to buy a car. I liked the sedan, too.Plus, with a 4 to 2 ratio of sales, there’s just a more diverse number of B Wagons to choose from. Then add in that the majority of them had only one superficial update around 1980 that lasted for them until 1990 and it seems like a plethora of them.1985 models received minor updates while styling remained unchanged. The interior was updated for 1985, marking its most significant update since 1977. The simulated woodgrain appliqué used on the dash was replaced with a simulated silver metallic appliqué. The shaft-style radio was replaced with a more modern DIN-and-a-half style radio, while the pull-out headlight switch was replaced by a push button style switch. The climate controls were updated with rotary switches for the fan and rear window defroster replacing the toggle style switches. The instruments were updated to have a more modern appearance, with a horizontal speedometer while a round speedometer was included with the optional gauge package. The 2-door models featured a unique rear window that created a semi-fastback. This glass had sharp corners giving it three sides. This was done through "hot-wire" bending process. The Caprice was available as the sport coupe or as the Landau coupe. The Landau coupe featured a partially covered vinyl roof.

The Chevy sedan’s already-healthy 121.5″ wheelbase was stretched to a whopping 125″ that was very much Cadillac territory. These big wagons simply were the Suburbans of their time: A vehicle to take it all and tow it all.  It should have come as no surprise when Suburban sales really started taking off in the late ’70s.Let’s take a look at this fine ’73 Caprice wagon that Mr. Green posted at the Cohort. Of course there were Pontiac, Olds and Buick versions too. I do wish Cadillac had made one, but maybe this is why they didn’t: The Caddy doors don’t really jive with the clamshell rear section. And how many of these have been made? That was my question, as I remember that our family’s 1970 Chevy wagon (non-woodgrain siding) was a Kingswood, and I remember the 1971 models were called Kingswoods. All engines were now equipped with Throttle-body fuel-injection, and the 305 cu in engine was now added to the option list. The available engines were now the 4.3 L V6, the 305 cu in V8 and the 350 cu in V8. The 4.3 L and 350 engines were equipped with TH700-R4 transmissions while the 305 engine used the TH200-4R transmission. The 4.3 L and the 305 used the 3.08:1 axle ratio, while the 350 powered cars now used a 3.42:1 axle ratio. Wow ! I wasn’t aware these things had an electric, automatic back door , it’s pretty cool! I vote for the Custom Cruiser as my favorite of the bunch

1990 was a carry-over year for the 9C1 Caprice with the only major change being door mounted seat-belts. In Michigan State Police tests, the Dodge Diplomat and Plymouth Fury were no longer produced, so the only competition was from the LTD Crown Victoria. The Caprice won all six categories for 1990, having the quickest 0-100 times, the fastest road course times, the best brakes, highest top speed, the best fuel economy and the best interior ergonomics. This was the first time any car had won all six categories in Michigan State Police tests. The new styling increased the trunk capacity of both coupes and sedans to 20.9 cubic feet (0.59 m3). This increase was also partially achieved with a now standard compact spare tire on a 16-inch (410 mm) wheel. A new frame lift jack replaced the bumper mounted model. A larger 25 US gallons (95 l; 21 imp gal) fuel tank was standard equipment in sedans and coupes. Easy-roll radial tires, improved anti-corrosion measures, low friction ball joints and larger front suspension bushings were also new for 1980. Puncture-sealant tires and cornering lights were new options. The 1977 Caprice Classic was not only smaller in overall dimensions, but also in engine size. For the first time since the Caprice was introduced in 1965, a V8 engine was no longer standard equipment. The base engine for 1977 Chevrolet Caprice coupes and sedans was Chevy's long-running 250 cu in six-cylinder powerplant rated at 110 hp (82 kW). This engine was last available in a full-size Chevy in 1973 in the lower-line Bel Air. Standard on station wagons and optional on other Caprice models was a 145 hp (108 kW) 2-barrel 305 cu in version of the Chevy's small-block V8. This was the first year the 305 cu in had been used in a full-size Chevrolet; it was first introduced in 1976 in compact and mid-sized Chevrolet lines. A 170 hp (127 kW) 350 cu in V8 with four-barrel carburetion was now the top engine offering as the larger 400 and 454 V8s were discontinued.

The "Landau" model was also introduced in 1975, and was primarily an appearance package. Carried over unchanged into 1976, the Landau featured a choice of special paint colors, sports-styled dual remote outside rearview mirrors, color-keyed wheel covers, a landau vinyl roof (with chrome band across the roof), a vinyl bodyside molding insert, and pinstriping. Inside there were color-keyed seat belts and floormats. Fender and dashboard emblems rounded out the package. With minor changes, the Landau would be carried over into the 1977-era coupe models. I used to have a loaded moonroof/4-speed ’79 GrandAm with every available option except power windows and digital clock. I still have a very rough ’73 Buick Century Gran Sport with manual windows & power locks. Odd. Although I’m not the world’s biggest fan of GM’s big passenger cars from 1971 – 1976, I can’t resist the lure of the wagons. Their sheer size and technical ambition is compelling, even when they inevitably succumb to GM’s typical overreach. When they arrived I was literally bowled over, and on an unprecedented scale.  With their extended wheelbase, unique rear suspensions and forward-facing third seats, they share a few qualities with my beloved Peugeot purpose built wagons. However, it’s their “clamshell” tailgates that, for better or worse, really set them apart: Only GM could have come up with those. Oh, well…Power front disc brakes were standard equipment, along with a larger 255-gross horsepower (170 net) 400 cubic-inch Turbo Fire V8. This engine, along with all optional powerplants, were designed to run on regular leaded, low-lead or unleaded gasoline of 91 research octane or higher. To achieve this, all engines had the compression ratios lowered to 8.5:1. General Motors was the first of the big three to have all engines run on regular fuel and these changes were made to help meet the increasing stringent emission regulations that were to come in to place in years to come. In the 1970s, the Chevrolet Caprice name was also used in South Africa for a version of the Holden's Statesman.[1]

The dashboard, radio and climate control graphics were revised; the speedometer read up to 100 mph (160 km/h), and had smaller numbers for kilometers per hour. The Caprice convertible would be discontinued after the 1975 model year along with its full-size B-body ragtop counterparts including the Oldsmobile Delta 88, Buick LeSabre and Pontiac Grand Ville. Just about 8,350 Caprice Classic rag tops found buyers in 1975, and both surviving Caprice Classic (1973 to 75) and Impala (1971, 1972) ragtops have demonstrated quite an appreciation in value. Holy cat — I am pretty confident that the blue ’76 Custom Cruiser in the video is the one I used to own. I recognize the dent in the rear bumper as well as the click or clunk sound you hear just before the gate fully closes. I found it in the car corral at Carlisle in 2003, and sold it in 2005 to a fellow in Pennsylvania who is a serious clamshell collector (who I think is operating the gate in the video). He told me he was using it for trips and that he had installed a CB or ham radio or something with a big antenna like the one you see there. Here is a picture of our original, fully loaded with 455 4 Barrel, 76 Grand Safari. Taken in 1978 when I was 17, in the Catskill Mountains of New York State. I drove this car more than anyone in our family. Eventually it was transferred into my name. Had it 14 years.. it was always garaged, taking care of, waxed and mint. I should have kept it forever!!! PS Don’t look at me, just the car. Those shorts and shirt are ridiculous but that was the style in 1978. LOLI’m looking for a electric tailgate key switch for a 1972 chevrolet kingswood estate wagon can anyone help

Speaking of tailpipes, this car has it on the wrong side. The exhaust pipe runs down the passenger side of the car, but then it does a 90 and runs straight across and out the driver’s side between the rear spring shackle and the tailgate housing. The spare tire well gets in the way of it going straight out on the passenger side, so it is hanging a bit low on this car. I’m not sure why it’s been called the “clamshell” for so many years, considering a trunk lid resembles a clamshell more than the tailgate and window on these cars. To me, it’s more like a garage door, or perhaps a double barn door turned on its side!Given the work they did to convert the car into a wagon, they could have used the c-pillar and rear door glass from the donor car also. Otherwise I believe there are some people who can cut toughened glass, to modify the rear glass. In this video I give a full in depth tour of the1993 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Station Wagon. They would eventually bounce back, but never anywhere close to where they had been before ’73. Ford managed to stay on top through 1976, but the downsized ’77 Chevys finally broke through into a commanding lead. The ’79 Panthers failed to achieve the comeback Ford was hoping for; Ford built fewer fullsize wagons in ’79 than in ’78, and Chevy’s ’79 full-size wagon production was nearly double Ford’s. 1993 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Description. The 1968 Caprice received a minor facelift that included a new grille with taillights set into the bumper and optional hidden headlamps. 1968 Caprice coupes came standard with the new Astro Ventilation system, which included extra vents in the dash, and the removal of vent (wing) windows. Federally mandated side marker lamps became standard on all US cars that year; the Caprice carried over the optional white corner marker lamps at the forward edge of the fenders in addition to the now-required amber parking lights which were illuminated with the headlights. The famous L72 427 cubic-inch 425 hp (320 kW) Turbo Jet was once again available. Also, a new 307 cu in (5.0 L) Turbo Fire V8 rated at 200 hp (150 kW) replaced the 195 hp (145 kW) 283 cu in (4.6 L) small block as the standard engine. Inside, the instrument panel was revised with a return to the horizontal sweep speedometer and a revised three-spoke steering wheel. The horizontal sweep speedometer made adding an optional instrument cluster a difficult proposition; this was solved by narrowing the speedometer within its opening and flanking it with engine-turned instruments in the place of warning lights. The fuel gauge, placed next to the speedometer within its own pod in the base models, was moved to its new place next to the speedometer. A tachometer took the place of the fuel gauge in the large opening left by the fuel gauge. The 1966 Caprice received only minor detail changes from its 1965 predecessor that included a revised grille and new rectangular taillights which replaced the Chevrolet-traditional triple round tailights used in full-sized cars each year since 1958 with the exception of the bat-winged '59 model. New options for 1966 included the automatic "Comfortron" air conditioning system on which the driver could set a constant year-round temperature reading and a "Tilt and Telescopic" steering wheel that could be adjusted vertically in six positions as well as be telescoped further out from the steering column for improved driver comfort. The Caprice was renamed the Caprice Classic for 1973, a year highlighted by a new cross-hatch grille over the new 5 mph (8 km/h) energy absorbing front bumper and revised square taillights, again mounted in the bumper. Increasingly stringent emission standards added EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valves to engines, and accordingly horsepower figures continued to drop. The standard Turbo-Fire 400 cu in (6.6 L) two-barrel was now rated at 150 hp (112 kW) while the only optional engine was the Turbo-Jet 454 cu in (7.4 L) V8 produced 245 hp (183 kW) with dual exhaust (215 hp (160 kW) with single exhaust used in station wagons).
